Senator James Webb is the senior Senator from Virginia. He is a prominent author and a former Secretary of the Navy under President Ronald Reagan. Senator Webb has been involved in educational policy for many years, and has been influencial in his work on the GI Bill.
Congressman Chaka Fattah has served in Congress since 1994 and now is in his eighth term representing the Philadelphia District. A life-long resident of the city, Fattah attended city public schools, the Community College of Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School, and the University of Pennsylvania Fels School of State and Local Government where he earned a Master’s Degree in Government Administration. He also completed the Senior Executive Program for State Officials at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
Dennis Van Roekel, a 23-year teaching veteran and longtime activist and advocate for children and public education, is president of the 3.2 million-member National Education Association. As NEA president, he leads the nation’s largest labor union and advocate for quality public schools.
Peter Smith is is the Senior Vice President of Academic Strategies and Development for Kaplan Higher Education. He is a former Congressman from Vermont and has served as President of California State University Monterey Bay and at the Community College of Vermont. Prior to joining Kaplan Higher Education, he served as Assistant Director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris. He holds a Doctor of Education from Harvard University. Dr. Smith recently authored Harnessing America’s Wasted Talent: A New Ecology of Learning (Jossey-Bass, 2010) and will be signing copies of his book at the National Capitol Summit.
