    EPI/ODU SUMMER INSTITUTE ON STUDENT SUCCESS 2008  
 

JULY 21-25, 2008, Norfolk/Virginia Beach (Hampton Roads), Virginia

 

The Summer Institute on Student Success is a five-day shared learning opportunity for participants, beginning at 10am on Monday, July 21, 2008 and ending at 12 noon on Friday, July 25. Each day will conclude by 3pm. A reception is planned for Monday evening and an optional baseball game on Friday night.

Monday, July 21

Introduction to Student Success. This opening, all-day session will introduce participants to issues of student success and discuss why it is an important issue, why students leave (and stay), the cost of student attrition, and provide a framework for understanding student success and the nexus between students and the institution.

OPENING RECEPTION (5:00pm). Location TBA.

Tuesday, July 22

Morning Session

Best Practices in Student Success. The presenters will introduce best practices as evidenced by other institutions. Participants will also dialogue about what works on their campuses and present to the group, and be introduced to EPI's Effective Practices in Student Success database.

Afternoon Session

Using Data. Improving student success on campus is all about data-driven decision making. This session will explore the importance of data in the process, including defining and conducting a retention audit, program evaluations, and institutional research. Participants will hear institutional accounts and practices and also provide their own experiences. Participants will also learn about EPI resources, such as FastTrack and the Institutional Student Retention Assessment (ISRA).

Wednesday, July 23

Morning Session

Strategic Planning/Team Building. Participants will learn and talk about how to "move" a campus through strategic planning. Discussion about goal setting and oeprationalizing the goals will take place with activities.

Afternoon Session

Leadership and Campus Change. A fundamental component of retention planning is understanding institutions and the dynamic change process. Institutions are notoriously complex, and participants will gain a better idea of the role of leadership and all staff in making change happen.

Thursday, July 24

Morning Session

Strategic Enrollment Management. Jay Goff will provide information from his years of experience as a Dean of Enrollment Management. This session will provide hands-on ideas and strategies for putting a plan together on campus.

Afternoon Session

Cost-Benefit Analysis and Budgeting. No discussion is complete without understanding the business side of student success. Participants will learn that spending money will save money in the short- and long-term. Participants will be introduced to EPI's Retention Calculator that can be used (free) for their institution.

Friday, July 25

Morning Session (Final Session)

Portfolio Presentations and Closing Comments. During the institute, participants will be building a portfolio with the basics for an institutional plan. On this final day, participants will present their portfolio to the class. Copies of all portfolios will be provided to participants. The session will end with a final discussion to pull the week together, and also discuss "where to go from here " for participants.

EVENING. Optional Tidewater Tides (AAA) baseball game at Harbor Park.
